Most holidays have a celebratory vibe, and you can open or end a conversation with an upbeat tone. “Happy New Year.” “Merry Christmas”. Even “Happy Independence Day” works for me (I prefer that over “Happy Fourth of July.”)
Memorial Day is different
I’ve not been posting in recent weeks due to other commitments, but Memorial Day presents an opportunity to make a statement.
My statement is about statements, a meta-cartoon in that sense. Some people casually dismissed DJT’s words as “Oh, that’s just Trump being Trump.” Exactly.
This isn’t fake news. He said it, and I’ll remember like the soldiers I drew.
I am honored to be mentioned among the Memorial Day editorial cartoons highlighted by Mike Peterson in The Daily Cartoonist. At the same time, I am deeply saddened that I had reason to draw this cartoon.
On a brighter note
For many Americans, Memorial Day serves double duty. We honor those who died for our country, but also mark this day as the unofficial beginning of summer.
Get out there and celebrate that. I’m not waiting for June 21.
No one should like this cartoon Frank, and that's exactly why I'm glad you took the time and made the effort to do it, draw it, create it. The truth often hurts. That's OK, in fact - - - it's good, the way it should be. Hard truth. We need to hear it. The truth must continue to matter. We must take stock and remember.
Never forget.
(The soldiers who fought, obviously and the President who mocked them.) Unbelievable, yet facts are facts. Great cartoon, Frank!
