Language evolves, and along with it, so do famous quotes and sayings. Take the title of this post, f’rinstance, as I turn on folksy speak mode.
The popular Mark Twain quote is, “Everybody COMPLAINS about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” Complaining is a subset of talking, so I guess I wasn’t too far off, but how I remember it and how it was said or written are different. My recollection is the kind of wrong answer that’ll cost you money on Jeopardy under “SAY WHAT?”
But wait, there’s more! This famous line about the weather did not come from Mark Twain; it came from his writin’ friend, Charles Dudley Warner. You might call them pen pals because they co-authored a book.
Folksy speak mode is still on. I’m mighty grateful you’ve read this, and I reckon I’ll see you again soon!
Insightful cartoon using a famous Mark Twain quote as a springboard. I dare you to create one from this Twain quote: "I collect pets: young girls — girls from 10 to 16 years old; girls who are pretty and sweet and naive and innocent."
The coldest winter was a summer I spent in San Francisco?
